2021 Scholarship Winner is Thomas Lippincott
The 2021 Scholarship Committee selected Nordonia senior Thomas Lippincott as the winner of the $1000 scholarship. Thomas plans to major in Environmental Science at Central Michigan University. His goal is to "help farmers to create ways to grow crops more effectively while using fewer chemicals that pollute the soil and water. With the right knowledge we can make farming more sustainable and better for the planet." He has been interested in this field since he was very young and states that he loves being outside and working with his hands and realized that with hard work he can do what he loves and make a contribution to the planet with the right education. This young man appears to fit our scholarship requirements and we are proud to be a small part of his future plans.
2020 Scholarship Winner is Ahmad AlSaafin
Our winner of the garden club 2020 scholarship of $1000 is Ahmad Al Saafin. He sent a very gracious thank you to the club in which he said our generous scholarship will cover the cost of his textbooks for his first semester at the University of Akron where he will be working toward a degree in physical therapy. He wrote an excellent essay in which he expressed his lifelong dream of having a profession where he could help others. One of his teachers noted in her recommendation the following, "This student has overcome a lot in the two years he has been at Nordonia including moving to a new country, living with a new family and learning a new language. He has worked so hard to catch up to his peers.” Since there was no awards ceremony we don't have a picture at this time but I have requested he send us one and hope to have it at our picnic.
Nordonia Hill Garden Club scholarship of $1000 was awarded to Ahmad AlSaafin in a virtual award ceremony on May 7, 2020. Ahmad was chosen by the scholarship committee based on recommendations of teachers, academic and extracurricular activities and responses to essay questions. His goal is to earn a doctorate in physical therapy and help people lead healthy, normal lives by restoring function in spite of disabilities. He came to Nordonia two years ago from another country, lived with a new family and learned a new language. He participated in sports and other school activities and maintained a high grade point average earning honor and high honor roll placement. He plans to attend the University of Akron.
